How to Make Your Home Feel More Spacious!

by Glenn Maxwell

As we spend a great deal of time within the home, it should be somewhere we feel comfortable and content. However, some properties can feel much more cramped than what they should be, whether it be obstructing walls, too much clutter, or lack of natural light. If you feel as though the walls are closing in on you, it may be time you made some changes to ensure your home feels welcoming and roomy.

If you’re in need of some inspiration, take a look at the tips and tricks below on how to make your home lighter, brighter and spacious:

1. Go open plan

Dividing walls can cause a huge obstruction within your living space, both in practical terms and blocking natural light. In more recent years, open plan living has become a key trend in modern homes to create a flowing layout between the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Knocking down walls between rooms not only creates the illusion of more space but also ensures that it’s easier to entertain and spend time together as a family throughout the day.

2. Install patio doors

Adding patio doors onto the exterior wall of the dining room or kitchen is the perfect way to invite the outdoors in. Instead of a solid wall, a large glass patio allows natural light to flood through the room, making it feel lighter and brighter. During the spring and summer months, the garden will almost act as an extension of the home as you slide the patio doors all the way across and thus, promotes a healthy connection with the outdoors. Which sliding doors should you use? Well, there are several different types to choose from, including lift and slide or in-line sliding doors, depending on your personal preference.

3. Start a decluttering spree

All of us are guilty of hoarding items we have collected over the years, but there may come a time when you need to undertake a decluttering spree to give your home a much fresher feel. Browse each room and consider the items that no longer have a home or are rarely used. Then consider donating, selling, or throwing them away if they have no further use. Having unused surfaces and empty corners can make a room feel so much larger without having to spend at all – you may be surprised at how much space you have already acquired.

4. Add mirrors

Mirrors are a great accessory to add to your home. Not only are they fashionable, but they also work wonders for making any living space look larger. If hung correctly and you opt for a fairly minimalistic frame, it will give the illusion of greater visual space. You can incorporate mirrors into a room in various ways – either as a full mirrored wall, hanging on a plain wall, or as a mirrored cupboard door.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to make your home look and feel bigger. By following these tips, you’re sure to notice a huge difference.
