Stay Safe, Stay Cozy: How to Improve Your Road Trip Experience

by Carter Toni

Road trips are all about freedom. You can pick and choose where you go, can stay in places where most tourists can’t and have the freedom of spontaneity every step of the way. You don’t need a massive RV in order to enjoy your road trip comfortably or even safely. In fact, RVs can be more of a detriment to your trip than a boon. If you’re someone who wants to get out there and explore the wilderness and camp out, RVs can pose more concerns than solutions. So, what is the best way to improve your safety and comfort on a road trip? You can usethis guide to answer that question!

Get a Rooftop Tent

The best part about a roof bunk is that it can fit on any vehicle with ease. It packs down compactly while you are driving so that you don’t need to worry about the wind or even low tree branches catching and ripping it open. When you need it, it pops open in just a moment. This drastically reduces the time it takes to set up camp since you have your tent practically ready and waiting for you at any moment.

A rooftop tent isn’t just about comfort, however. Being up and away from the ground means you’re better protected against a variety of dangers, from animals to even the elements. If there’s heavy rainfall, for example, you don’t have to worry about sinking into the mud or water flooding your tent.

Have Offline Backups of Everything

Map apps are an excellent tool, but that doesn’t mean you should rely solely on them. First, save the area you’re exploring into an offline map. This way, even if you don’t have service, you can find your way around on the map. You should also have a paper map in your possession as well, to accommodate any tech-related issues.

Other backups to have include things like a compass and even a radio. If you are going into an area that is devoid of services, of course, you must checkin with someone you know. You typically won’t have this issue on a road trip, but if you plan on going on a long hike during your trip, always make sure someone knows the route you’re taking, when you leave, and when you should be back to give them a call to let them know you’re finished and safe. This way, if something happens, a loved one or service center employee can send for help.

Ensure You Have an Up-To-Date First Aid Kit

Not only should you have a first-aid kit, but you also need to checkexpiry dates before you go on your trip. If anything is out of date, replace it before you leave. This way, you’ll know the medicine and treatments in there will work. You’ll also have re-familiarized yourself with what you have to work with, so you can act faster if there’s an injury on your trip.

Treat Yourself to High-End Camp Gear

From a portable stove to a shower kit, there are so many ways that you can take your camping experience to the next level on the road. Since your tent will be on the roof, you’ll have a lot of storage space in your vehicle for these essentials. Say goodbye to trying unsuccessfully to cook food on an open fire and instead to delicious meals and other creature comforts that can make any road trip feel wonderful.
