Advice for Aspiring Fashion Designers!

by Sean Dixon

Making a living designing clothes and accessories for models to wear on the runway and in advertising campaigns may sound like a dream job to some people, therefore learning how to do so may be appealing. This, however, is not as simple as it may first appear. Few fashion designers, like Ralph Lauren and Alexander McQueen, make it big enough to have their names synonymous with their labels on a global scale. Most designers in the industry work for companies that cater to the masses by making ready-to-wear and staple pieces.

Here are some ground rules to follow if you want to start a career in fashion design to increase your odds of succeeding in the competitive sector.

You should be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

How about your artistic abilities? Can you think of new designs? I was wondering whether you’ve ever attempted sketching something truly original and expressive of your own style and character. If you can’t even draw stick figures and consider teal a beverage colour, this might not be the best field for you if you have high aspirations. If you’ve discovered that you have an instinctive appreciation for things like colour theory, pattern recognition, design principles, symmetry, and proportion, you’ve got yourself a formidable asset on the path to becoming a fashion designer. Build a portfolio of your best work; it will act as your résumé if you enter the fashion industry for real.

To broaden one’s horizons.

If you never step outside of your comfort zone, you will never achieve your goals. Even if it appears like it’s about something basic like the history of buttons, broaden your horizons and enrol in sewing or pattern-making classes, learn to use design software, get a degree in fashion, and attend trainings and seminars on the subject. Keep up with the latest fashions by reading fashion publications, keeping an eye out for upcoming fashion events you can attend, and researching online what’s hot and what’s not in the world of pop culture and fashion disputes. All of this information is crucial if you want to become a fashion designer, since you will need to be abreast of industry changes and your competitors at all times. For more information visit greetingsus .

Begin your career in the fashion industry with an internship or entry-level position. It’s important to network as much as possible once you’re inside, from the ground up. Never discount the value of a personal connection, no matter how minor; even the mailroom boy could come in handy someday. Don’t limit your network to simply the bigwigs in the fashion industry; instead, broaden it to include everyone from up-and-coming designers to store owners. Once you’ve made your name for yourself, having connections on the advertising and marketing team, the merchandise display and sales staff, the photographers, and the editors will be invaluable. As with any goal worth pursuing, learning how to become a fashion designer isn’t a walk in the park.
