After major layoffs, Relic Entertainment, a game development studio known for Company of Heroes and Age of Empires IV, will restructure. As a result of Sega’s new edict to focus on its core franchises, including Company of Heroes, 121 jobs have reportedly been cut.
The difficult decision to restructure has been made to ensure maximum focus on Relic’s core franchises at a time when external factors are impacting our industry more than ever,’ Sega explained, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
In spite of its healthy financial position, Sega remains committed to supporting and investing in Relic Entertainment and its franchises, including Company of Heroes, which has received critical acclaim. After this necessary restructure, we are confident the studio will be in a strong position to continue delivering outstanding experiences to players all over the world.
This decision was ‘incredibly difficult’ for Sega as Relic Entertainment “treasures its people and is proud of its culture.” Sega announced it will offer severance packages and career transition services to all employees laid off.
‘We would like to express our sincere appreciation to them all for helping Relic Entertainment achieve global renown,’ Sega said.
As of now, Sega and Relic Entertainment will continue to support Company of Heroes 3 in the months to come.
We are thinking of those affected by the layoffs.
