Making your job application stand out to recruiters can be one of the hardest things to do, especially when there are so many people going for the same job roles. Indeed, the job of the recruiter is not getting any easier at all. Totally inundated with job applications and trying to decide who is good enough to even get an interview.
As someone who is applying for the job role offered, it is therefore up to you to make their job a little easier so that when they read your cover letter and see your resume, you come across as the perfect candidate for the job, but you are going to have to get yours noticed in order to get it to read.
Use industry-specific jargon
It is important to enforce your knowledge and use the correct industry-specific jargon within your correspondence and in your language when you are making your job application. This will help the recruiters understand that you know what you are talking about. However, in saying this, it is important not to overdo it as you may find that you are speaking to someone who perhaps is not as well versed as you are. Obviously, if you are speaking to them either over the phone or in person, you can explain what the terminology means should they not understand.
Get your literature correct
With this being said, when you are writing your cover letter, you are going to want to be a bit more standard in your terminology and your language, as you may find, especially with the larger companies that they have a recruiter on board who may not be a specialist in the department that you are looking to join.
If this is the case, then you are going to want to come across as professional and ideal for the job role that you are applying for. Of course, it may be that you have never written a cover letter before or that the last one you wrote was some years ago. In this case, you may find that you need some help on how to write a cover letter.
Font and layout are important too
Font and layout are important, too, and not only with regard to your cover letter but also with regard to your resume. You are going to have to make sure that it is clear and can be read easily, so you will want to stay away from very small fonts or those that are not so clear. In saying that, you do want the font sizes to be so large that your resume resembles a book rather than a couple of pages of type.
Bullet pointing is good, and if any further information is required, you can always add these as a note under or the recruiter can ask you at the interview, but you should make sure that your resume is tailored to each of the job roles that you are applying for, rather than have one standard copy of your resume which you will send to all the different job roles.
