For most young people in South Korea, especially among millennials and Gen Z(born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s), the Myers-Briggs Type Index (MBTI) test has become very popular these days. But how did it become so popular and why do different personality types matter to them? What is the Myers-Briggs Type Index(MBTI) test?

The MBTI is a self-reported personality type test tool designed based on the psychological type theory of Swiss psychoanalyst Karl Jung. According to the four indicators of extroversion and introversion (E-I), feeling and intuition (S-N), thinking and feeling (T-F), and judgment and perception (J-P), a total of 16 personality types are presented. The test can identify a person’s personality type based on the person’s test records, such as if he/she is extroverted or introverted, and the functions they usually use, such as senses or intuition.

How did the MBTI test become popular?

The pandemic has taken an enormous hit on our social lives. Most people are now staying indoors to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Due to the reduction of face-to-face contact and social gatherings caused by the pandemic, the MBTI is very popular among the Millennials and Gen Zs, especially this year. It’s now easier to view personality types via smartphones and share them online.

In one aspect, the MBTI test is to help individuals understand people they don’t know. It is also a good idea to use these tests because personality has a great influence on their decision-making process, you can figure out their way of thinking, how they approach situations, see if they are too sensitive, or know how they are with other people around. The MBTI has become more popular during the pandemic also to celebrities, and they share their results online for their fans to see their natural character and how they are as human beings. Several fanbases all over the world would see their idols’ personality tests and they usually take these results and take the test themselves to assess if they match with their idols to give them another certain connection towards these celebrities.

When people worry about career paths and interpersonal relationships, they take personality tests or go to psychological testing cafes. Personality tests are very popular for these individuals because the subject of knowing yourself as a person is important and people of these ages want to understand their emotions and desires in order to make the right choices in their lives.
