The 2022 Sires Produce Stakes is a Group 1 set-weight race for two-year-olds held over a distance of 1400 metres at Randwick Racecourse with prizemoney of $1M. It is the first Group 1 race of the season for 2yo horses at a distance greater than 1200m.
The Sires Produce Stakes 2022 will be run on Saturday 2nd April on day 1 of The Championships as part of the Autumn Racing Carnival.
The Sires Produce gives future middle-distance gallopers their first opportunity to stretch out in trip at the highest level. The 2021 winner Anamoe went on to finish second in the Cox Plate during the Spring Racing Carnival later in the year. The final field features the future sprinter/miler types and traditionally attracts a similar field to the lucrative Golden Slipper. The Golden Slipper is the “Grand Final” for many 2yos and only those who have shown stamina and strength through their first preparation continue on with their campaigns.
The 2yo Triple Crown
The Sires Produce Stakes is the second leg of Sydney’s two-year-old Triple Crown which consists of the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). Pierro in 2012 was the last horse to complete the Triple Crown and has since gone on to be a leading sire.
Sires Produce Form Guide
Horses that run on strongly over the 1200m of the Golden Slipper often look to back up in the Sires Produce a fortnight later. Keen bettors will watch the Golden Slipper replay to identify those horses who are making up ground late in the race. 2yo horses can show sharp improvement and horses that run on in the Slipper and continue racing are ones to follow.
Favourites have struggled in the Sires, with only four winning in the last 15 years. The well backed Anamoe ($1.9) won well last year, getting one back for the punters. Sydney horses have dominated the race with an even split between male and female winners in recent years.
Leading jockey Hugh Bowman has ridden the winner of the race four times in the last eight years, while future hall of fame jockey James McDonald brought up his first win in the race last year. The Godolphin racing operation has produced three winners in the last ten years and is always well represented. As the stable’s number one jockey, James McDonald will get the pick of the horses from the Blue Army each year. Whoever he chooses to ride must be respected as a strong chance.
