Know About Excavators

Excavators are also known as earthmovers. These are heavy machinery used in most of the construction projects in your city and remote places. They are also known as diggers, but they do more than digging. These machines are usually large and heavy, and only experienced/trained people can handle these machines. If you ever find excavators for sale advertisements, you must know the basics of these pieces of equipment. And only if you understand each piece of equipment correctly you can easily decide which to buy, hire or leasehold.

The excavators are used for different purposes such as:

  • Landscaping
  • Demolition
  • Mining projects
  • Handling
  • Construction
  • River dredging

The makeup of these machines is quite interesting. Although these machines are big and have various moving parts, each is made for specific purposes. One single excavator could weigh up to 180,000 lbs/81646 Kg and can lift even heavier objects.

Types of excavators:

An excavator is an earthmoving machine used for various construction projects. You can find these massive machines in cities for building construction, villages for drilling and road construction, railway projects, riverside for removing silts from the bottom of the river, etc. All these activities are impossible without these earthmovers, making them unique and crucial for any construction project.

There are two kinds of excavators:

The cable excavators and hydraulic excavators

Cable excavator: The moving of the parts are controlled by a series of steel wires and cables. These excavators were the ones that replaced the steam shovels in the 1990s.

Hydraulic excavators: These machines allow the driver to move the levers that control the hydraulic fluid to push and move the cylinders containing the boom and bucket of an excavator. You can see these types of excavators more than the cable ones.

Types of excavators:

Crawler excavators

These are used for landscape grading, mining and trench digging. This is also known as the standard excavator, as it is one of the common types of machine seen in every construction site. It got its name crawler because it runs on two rotating tracks (just link the military tank) and not on wheels.

Pros: Great for uneven terrain

Cons: Slower than other excavators

Wheeled Excavators

These are for the jobs on flat and rugged terrain. Unlike crawler, it has wheels, and it is best used in concrete and asphalt.

Pros: Faster than other crawlers

Cons: Won’t work appropriately on hilly/uneven terrain.

Suction excavators

These are used for fragile digging jobs. Other excavators break and destroy the land and create big dents on the surface; these suction machines are used for debris cleanup and underground projects. These are always in demand, especially for the construction works in cities, societies where you don’t want to disturb the public. You could see advertisements of these excavators for sale all the time because of their high demand.

Pros: No damage to the surrounding area.

Cons: The suction pipe is 30 cm (1 foot) or less in diameter, which is not suitable for big construction projects.

Long reach excavators

These are used for hard to reach places. This excavator has an arm and boom. The arm extends up to 40-100 feet, which is best for reaching different construction zones within 100 feet of distance.

Pros: Long arms are beneficial.

Cons: Because of the long arm, the tight spots are difficult to reach.

Hydraulic shovels

You can see this machine in mining and heavy digging projects. This machine is called the hydraulic shovel because 1- is the most potent excavator, 2- moves heavy rocks, minerals, and other heavy objects.

Pros: Powerful engine and a large bucket.

Cons: Sometimes, it becomes larger than necessary for some projects.

These are the leading excavators you could see on a construction site.
