You Mosquito Bite Is Swelling? Here’s When to Worry About It

Especially during the summer, mosquitoes are all over and unless you are lucky, it may be hard to avoid a bite. After being bitten, people react in different ways. But it should worry you when your mosquito bite starts to swell. This can be a sign that you are starting to develop complications. Other symptoms include blisters that are filled with fluids, welts, lymphangitis, and cellulitis, where the skin that surrounds the bite area becomes infected. Swelling could mean more than allergic reactions

But swelling after any form of insect bite could mean more than a normal allergic reaction. Remember that mosquitoes are dangerous insects that have the potential of transmitting dengue fever, malaria various forms of brain infections, and yellow fever. Other ailments that are transmitted by mosquitoes include the zika virus, West Nile virus, and meningitis. But again, there are instances where extreme allergic reactions can be a threat to your life, so you have to be cautious and know how your body is reciting to the mosquito bites.

These diseases have the potential of being life-threatening and this is the case even when the symptoms last for a short period. Also, even when not severe, a bite by a mosquito should never be taken lightly. Over the years, zika has been linked to deformities during the birth of children whose parents get infected when they are pregnant. It’s also been proven that the West Nile virus can also be extremely deadly.

Seek emergency medical help

If you notice any of these symptoms, you have enough reasons to be worried, and you should move with speed and visit a doctor. A fever that is higher than 101°F develops rashes on your body, redness of the eyes, pain in your joints or muscles, having a feeling of exhaustion, persistent headaches, and difficulty in breathing. Also, when the area of the bite turns reddish and keeps on expanding, you should consider using some anti-histamine, or visit a doctor who will prescribe some medications.

Prevention is better than cure

Make sure that you reduce the population of mosquitoes in your area all the time. Some of the methods that you can use to achieve this goal include using mosquito control spray, nets, electric appliances, coils, and more. Remember that you should also ensure that there is no favorable breeding ground in your home since this provides a sure way of limiting breeding by mosquitoes in your backyard.
